SMARTHINKING to Provide Real-Time, On-Demand Tutoring Through Colleges in MN, WV, and WY
Students Statewide Receive Access to Academic Assistance Up to 24 Hours a Day
Washington, DC (August 28, 2006) - SMARTHINKING, the leading provider of online tutoring to colleges and high schools, today announced that colleges in Minnesota, West Virginia and Wyoming will provide statewide 24/7 access to live tutors to students this Fall.
Beginning in September, colleges in Minnesota, West Virginia, and Wyoming will provide their students with academic help when and where the student needs it. Through statewide SMARTHINKING initiatives, these states will provide students with real-time, on-demand tutoring in math, writing, and a variety of science and business courses.
Minnesota, West Virginia, and Wyoming join several other states in offering statewide access to SMARTHINKING's academic assistance: Colorado Community Colleges Online (CO), Georgia Virtual Technical College (GA), Iowa Community College Online Consortium (IA), New Jersey Virtual Community College Consortium (NJ), Ohio Learning Network (OLN), and University of Texas System TeleCampus (TX).
Educational data demonstrates that college students are now more likely than ever to be distance learners or commuters, and research shows that the grades of students using on-demand tutoring can increase by 20 percent or more. SMARTHINKING helps schools to provide more convenient access to the academic services students need to succeed.
"We believe such support is paramount in helping students attain success, said James L. Skidmore, Chancellor of the West Virginia Council for Community and Technical College Education. "In addition, SMARTHINKING's ability to customize its services based on the needs of our consortium results in academic support that is more cost-effective and comprehensive than if each of our colleges developed this kind of service on its own."
"With SMARTHINKING, students will have the opportunity to connect to live tutors from any computer enabling students to get the help they need when they need it," said Gary Langer, Minnesota State Colleges and Universities (MNSCU) Associate Vice Chancellor of Academic Innovation.
"All Wyoming community colleges are beginning their third year of using SMARTHINKING. This is a valuable service we committed to provide to our students as a supplement to existing on-campus tutoring support," said to Ed Boenisch, deputy director of the Wyoming Community College Commission. "SMARTHINKING is an effective way for the colleges to address the needs of those students who take online courses and need additional assistance."
SMARTHINKING provides live tutoring in math, math in Spanish, writing, chemistry, organic chemistry, biology, anatomy & physiology, physics, economics, accounting, introductory finance, and Spanish. Writing support for all subjects is provided through SMARTHINKING's Online Writing Lab (OWL) - the world's largest. In academic year 2005-2006, almost 70,000 students from 300 schools had nearly 300,000 tutoring sessions.
